ICC Final Action Hearings Results and Implications
Fri, 03 Oct 2008 14:00:00 -0800
The conclusion of the 2008 International Code Council® (ICC) Final Action Hearings on September 24, 2008 marked the end of a code development cycle in which more energy efficiency improvements were considered–and approved–than ever before in International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) history. All of DOE's code change proposals were positively received at the Final Action Hearings. Once incorporated into the 2009 version of the IECC, DOE's changes as well as changes submitted by other parties will set a new baseline for IECC-compliant homes.
COMcheck 3.6.0 Software Released
COMcheck version 3.6.0 introduces the ASHRAE 90.1-2007 code. Included in the 90.1-2007 code implementation is the option for input of high albedo roof assemblies. The high albedo roof option has also been implemented under the ASHRAE 90.1-2004 code. Lighting component options have been upgraded to more accurately reflect currently available technologies. Mechanical report checklist items and mandatory requirements have been reviewed and upgraded. The Massachusetts state code will be discontinued in March 2009 when users will be directed to comply with the 2006 IECC code. The Minnesota whole building menu list was redesigned to make selection easier and consistent with floor area input. Numerous user interface and report modifications have been included that aim to address user-identified requests and/or improve usability of the software and reports.
REScheck 4.2.0 Released
REScheck version 4.2.0 was released in August, 2008. REScheck version 4.2.0 enables the IECC 2006 Additions/Alterations specifications, enhanced Beyond Code Advisor, removal of Massachusetts state code (Massachusetts projects are now to be based on IECC 2006), and several "under the hood" calculation and reporting enhancements.

DOE Announces $6.6 Million in Competitive Grant Selections
On September 8, 2008, U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Deputy Assistant Secretary for Energy Efficiency David Rodgers announced awards for approximately $6.6 million in competitive-selected grants for innovative state-level energy efficiency and renewable energy policies and projects. The DOE supported, state-led projects will focus on building utility scale energy capacity from renewables and demand reduction, as well as advanced building energy codes.
