Thomas Brassey (7 November 1805-1870) was an English railway contractor, born at Buerton, near Chester, Cheshire.
Brassey contracted for the construction of railways, at first in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, where 1700 miles were constructed under his direction, and later in many other parts of the world, amounting to a further 2800 miles.
At the time of his death, his estate was valued at £3,200,000 - an enormous amount at the time. For comparison, the estate of Prime Minister of the United Kingdom William Ewart Gladstone was valued at £60,000 at the time of his death.
