Acoustics is a branch of physics that studies sound, namely mechanical waves in gases, liquids, and solids. A scientist that works in the field of acoustics is an acoustician. The application of acoustics in technology is called acoustical engineering. There is often much overlap and interaction between the interests of acousticians and acoustical engineers.
...*coustics is characterized by its reliance on combinations of physical principles drawn from other sources; and that the primary task of modern physical acoustics is to effect a fusion of the principles normally adhering to other sciences into a coherent basis for understanding, measuring, controlling, and using the whole gamut of vibrational phenomena in any material.Origins in Acoustics. The Audio Spotlight (MIT Media Laboratory) - The Audio Spotlight (TM) uses subtle nonlinear properties of the air to create an extremely narrow sound beam. This beam ofsound behaves just like a beam of light - 'shining' it at a specific listener allows only that person to hear it, and projecting it against a surface creates an acoustic 'image' at the point of reflection. It is the first device that provides total control over both the location and distribution of high quality sound, something impossible to achieve with traditional loudspeakers.

Ultrasonic Power Sensory System - Includes a first and a second transducer coupled together through a coupling medium communicating undulating pressure wave for the transfer of electrical power into an undulating pressure wave communicated into an electrical response. This is a signal that can be converted into useful power for an embedded sensory and actuation control unit. The primary advantage is the transfer of power through a coupling medium without the use of electrical power wires.
