The Enneagram is a nine-pointed diagram. The Modern introduction of the enneagram is credited to George Gurdjieff. The Enneagram as presented by Gurdjieff and developed by his students represents two basic cosmic laws: combination (called the law of three or triads), and process (called the law of seven or process). Combination means those events or forces which combine to create a new event. The law of process governs the order of how things occur. A second line of development, totally unrelated to the Gurdjieffian, or 4th Way approach, is that of the nine elemental types of personalities, sometimes called the Palmer approach.
The 4th way, Gurdjieff-Ouspensky
The line of development associated with the 4th way developed out of the writings of Gurdjieff's students. The first generation of Gurdjieff's students and their students. Chief of these are P.D. Ouspensky, Maurice Nicoll, J.G. Bennett, and Rodney Collin. They developed Gurdjieff's ideas and left their own accounts. There is an extensive bibliography devoted to the Gurdjieff-Ouspensky system.
