The Niger-Kordofanian language family was proposed by Joseph Greenberg in his 1963 book Languages of Africa, originally under the name 'Congo-Kordofanian'. It was the consequence of the addition of Kordofanian as a branch coordinate to the previously established Niger-Congo family. However, the Kordofanian languages have not been demonstrated to be more distantly related than other branches of Niger-Congo, and recent classifications have placed them within that family.
