2000 (MM) was a leap year starting on Saturday of the Gregorian calendar. In the Chinese Calendar it is the Year of the Dragon and in the western astrological calendar it is the year of Leo, the Lion. Popular culture also holds the year 2000 as the first year of the twenty first century and the third millennium. By strict interpretation of the Gregorian Calendar, however, this distinction falls to the year 2001. This is because the first century began with the year 1 (there was no year zero), the first century (or first 100 years AD) was from January 1, in the year one (AD 1) through December 31, in the year one-hundred (AD 100). The second century began on January 1, in the year one-hundred and one (101 AD). (The selection of AD 1 may be up to seven years from Jesus' birth, and January 1 is a historical choice for New Year's Day. 2000-01-01 is the day all the digits "rolled over".)

New Science Reference Guide: Migration of the Monarchs
There are two main populations of monarch butterflies in North America; one in the East and one in the West--new evidence shows that these populations may intermix. Every fall, the monarch begins its migration south to an overwintering site. In the spring the monarch leaves its winter roost and heads northward, about half way back, to lay its eggs on milkweed plants. The offspring of this monarch must continue the journey north on its own. In the fall, this new generation will begin the migration cycle south. To learn more about these amazing creatures, this guide lists selected titles, journal articles and Web sites about monarch butterflies, conservation initiatives, and migration projects.
New Science Reference Guide: Space Based Ornithology

A guide to books used in preparing Aeronautical and Astronautical Resources of the Library of Congress: A Comprehensive Guide. This guide was compiled to accompany a talk by Tom Crouch, senior curator of the Division of Aeronautics at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, on October 24, 2007, at the Library of Congress. His talk, "Aeronautics at the Library of Congress: Forty Years of One User's Expertise." celebrated the publication of a Library of Congress book, Aeronautical and Astronautical Resources of the Library of Congress: A Comprehensive Guide.
