INTEGRAL: INTEGRAL detects signature of critical cosmic accelerator Fri, 29 Aug 2008 08:09:00 -0000 Polarized photons provide an insight into the nature and energies of the particles that radiated them; this in turn gives us a handle on the nature of the acceleration processes at work in cosmic sources. INTEGRAL's detection of polarized gamma-rays from the Crab pulsar, reported by Dean and colleagues in the 29 August issue of Science, has significant implications for many aspects of high-energy accelerators. Rosetta: Rosetta's scientific instruments ready for close encounter with Steins Fri, 05 Sep 2008 09:19:00 -0000 As the Rosetta spacecraft closes in on asteroid Steins the science instruments are prepared for this extraordinary opportunity to study a rare, E-type asteroid. Final orbit trajectory corrections have been performed and the spacecraft is now on track for a closest approach at 20:58 CEST at a distance of 800±2 km. Rosetta: Rosetta fly-by of asteroid Steins: press conference (first results & images) Thu, 04 Sep 2008 07:14:00 -0000 First results and images from Rosetta's fly-by of asteroid Steins will be presented at a press conference, which will be webcast live, on Saturday 6 September starting at 12:00 CEST. Cluster: Cluster examines Earth-escaping ions Wed, 27 Aug 2008 13:13:00 -0000 Oxygen ions are constantly escaping from the Earth's upper atmosphere through the magnetic polar caps. This has long been observed but the underlying mechanism has eluded scientists - until now. A recent study reports the first experimental assessment of a physical mechanism that makes a significant contribution to the acceleration of oxygen ions towards the centre of the terrestrial magnetic tail, along magnetic field lines. This assessment was made possible as a result of several years of data collected by the European Space Agency's Cluster mission. Gaia: Call for Expression of Interest in Participating in the GREAT programme Tue, 02 Sep 2008 13:52:00 -0000 The ESA Gaia Science Team and the Gaia Data Processing and Analysis Consortium are working with others in the community to build the European science capacity to successfully exploit the Gaia cornerstone mission. One aspect of this work will be carried out via the GREAT (Gaia Research for European Astronomy Training) programme. A Call for Expression of Interest in Participating in the GREAT programme has been issued with a deadline for receipt of proposals of 17:00 GMT (19:00 CEST) on 26 September 2008. XMM-Newton: XMM-Newton Announcement of Opportunity (AO8) Tue, 26 Aug 2008 10:21:00 -0000 Proposals are solicited for observations with XMM-Newton in response to the Eighth Announcement of Opportunity, AO-8, issued today. This AO covers the period May 2009 to April 2010 and is open to all proposers.
The deadline for receipt of proposals is 12:00 UT on 10 October 2008.

Show 179: HubbleWatch for August 2008 outreach@stsci.edu Thu, 28 Aug 2008 11:00:00 -0400 Hubble celebrated a new milestone in August – 100,000 orbits around the planet Earth. Scientists think they know why a certain galaxy has more globular clusters than its neighbors. And a black hole-inhabited galaxy is sending tendrils into the universe.
Show 178: Cassini and the Jets outreach@stsci.edu Thu, 28 Aug 2008 11:00:00 -0400 The Cassini spacecraft performed a daring flyby of Saturn’s moon Enceladus on March 12, flying about 15 kilometers per second (32,000 mph) through a geyser-like jet spurting from the moon’s surface. It captured sample molecules from the jet.
In August, it used special techniques to get pictures of the jets. Scientists want to know where the jets come from and whether Enceladus has water.
